Summary

The Department of Humanities at Michigan Technological University invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor in Philosophy with concentration on Biomedical Ethics. The Humanities Department offers degrees in Communication, Culture, and Media; Scientific and Technological Communication; and English. Philosophy courses serve all the different Humanities program areas, as well as the minor in philosophy & the Essential Education minor in Ethics & AI. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills and be able to work successfully within this interdisciplinary environment. There is not a remote option for this position.

Responsibilities and Essential Duties

1. Teach 3/4 , 3cr course load of Philosophy courses (typically including multiple sections of Biomedical Ethics, amongst other Ethics/Critical Thinking/Theory courses).
2. Revitalize the upper division & graduate level Biomedical Ethics course(s) to align with current understanding/practice 3. Assist with the development of additional Critical Thinking & Ethics courses/programs to support HU, other Major/Minor programs, & Essential Education.
4. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
5. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures

PhD in Philosophy, with areas of concentration in Applied Ethics, & areas of (service) in Ethics

Required Experience

• Minimum 10 years of teaching Introduction to Philosophy (or similar).
• Minimum 5 years of teaching any combination of the following; Critical Thinking, Ethical Theory, Critical Reasoning, etc.
• Minimum 3 years of teaching Biomedical Ethics.
• Experience teaching Healthcare Ethics.

Desirable Education and/or Experience:

• Evidence of continued education such as courses, workshops, etc, in areas such as; Teaching with AI, Post-Pandemic Teaching/Learning, Curriculum Development, etc.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements):*

• Demonstrated success in, or potential future contributions to, working with persons with a wide variety of backgrounds and viewpoints.
